I’m Worried About My Hearing

Common causes for hearing loss include aging and noise exposure. Less common causes include ototoxicity (medications that damage hearing), head trauma, chronic diseases, and disorders of the ear. If you are not hearing in the normal range, you have “hearing loss”. The amount of hearing loss you have can range from mild to profound. You may hear some pitches (e.g. bass) better than other pitches (e.g. treble).

If you suspect you may have hearing loss, a comprehensive hearing assessment can determine:

  • The potential cause of your hearing loss

  • The type and severity of your hearing loss

  • The configuration of your hearing loss across different pitches

  • Whether your hearing loss appears temporary or permanent

  • Whether your hearing loss should be investigated medically

  • Next steps to help manage your hearing loss, including communication strategies, amplification, and assistive listening devices

A hearing assessment involves:

  • A discussion about your hearing concerns and needs

  • Looking into your ears with an otoscope to check for any blockages or abnormalities

  • Tympanometry to check how well your middle ear is transferring sound to your inner ear

  • Pure-tone audiometry to find the softest level where you can hear tones at different pitches

  • Speech audiometry to check how well you can understand words

You will be guided throughout the assessment and will receive your results immediately after it has been completed. Although it can feel overwhelming when you have hearing loss, hearing treatment can be incredibly helpful.
