Getting the Most Out of Your Hearing Aids

Do you want to get the most out of your hearing aids for as long as possible? Follow these four steps to maximize the potential of your hearing aids!

1) Clean them regularly

Hearing aids live in your ears. This means that they quickly get clogged with ear wax and and sweat. About once a month it’s time to give your hearing aids a thorough cleaning. This looks different depending on the type of hearing aid you have. If you’re unsure of how to clean your hearing aids, make sure to ask your audiologist. Cleaning can involve the following:

hearing aid domes

Replacing hearing aid domes every 1-2 months.

waxguards

Replacing waxguards every 2 weeks - 2 months, depending on how much wax you produce.

earmold

Washing and drying earmoulds with tubing weekly.

2) Keep them dry.

Unless your hearing aids are waterproof, it’s important to keep them as dry as possible to avoid damaging the electronics. Using a dehumidifier daily is the best way to keep your hearing aids dry and avoid repairs.

Using a dehumidifier regularly will prevent moisture from building up in your hearing aids.

3) Ask your audiologist to check your hearing aid function routinely.

Hearing aids that are no longer functioning correctly can have reduced amplification, distortion, or produce internal noise. Your audiologist can do a listening check and electroacoustic analysis to find these issues.

4) Ask your audiologist to update your programming using real ear measurement any time your hearing changes.

See your audiologist at least once a year for a routine hearing check. If any changes in hearing have occurred, your audiologist can update your hearing aid programming using real ear measurements to ensure you keep hearing your best.
